Capstone Development Corp. was selected by the Winthrop University Real Estate Foundation to develop new student housing adjacent to the main campus of Winthrop University, a historic, public university located in Rock Hill, S.C. The Capstone team worked closely with the Foundation and University officials to design the new residential community which houses 406 students in single-occupancy bedrooms, in a mix of four bedroom/two bath suites and two bedroom/two bathroom suites. The building is four stories and clad with brick and cementitious siding. The fourth floor is a dormer story that is built within the roof framing to bring down the scale of the building and add to the “townhouse” homelike atmosphere of the community. The architectural style of the facilities compliments the historic campus buildings, with features evocative of Charleston and landmark South Carolina sites and buildings. There are academic and recreational amenities, management offices and a mini-food court within the community. Construction on the project began in February 2002 and the community opened for occupancy in January 2003.
