South Carolina State University was founded in 1896 and as a land grant university ranks as one of the top universities consistently providing baccalaureate degrees for African American Students. In 2002 a process was begun to up-date the university and revitalize much of its infrastructure and buildings. As part of this process the Capstone Team was selected to develop, design and construct a new student housing community. Completed in 2006, the on-campus housing community includes 13 new structures with 784 new beds. The buildings contain a combination of four bedroom/two bath and two bedroom/two bath units with a kitchen area that includes a full refrigerator and microwave and a den area. The structures are steel framing with a brick façade. The centerpiece of the development is a clubhouse that offers a community meeting and includes a spacious gathering area and a large fireplace.
